Here are a few other things you could have tried.
1.Startup in safe mode, then run the anti-virus and spyware. You still would need a
firewall installed as quickly as possible when you went back on line. Safe mode does not
start any programs and loads minimal drivers. (Start it without network support)
2.If you know the name of the virus, search for it on the net, on another computer. Many
times Microsoft or someone like Norton have free programs you can run to remove them.
3.SpyBot search and destroy comes with TeaTimer. This prevents programs from
modifying the system registry without you knowledge or permission. SpyBot also has
features in it's advanced options, mentioned in my book for identifying trojans and viruses
that install themselves at system startup.
4.Installing a firewall, while in safe mode would also notify you of any strange program
trying to access the Internet, and allow you to block it.
5.Changing some advanced Internet explorer settings may have made the virus
unable to change your pages. (Depends on what method it used).
